There were two Harvey-related instances in the comics released this past Wednesday, but neither of them took place in current DC continuity!

The first was a guest appearance in Batman: Arkham City, the prequel comics to the video game sequel (thus making it also a sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum), which marks the first time that Paul DIni has ever written Two-Face outside of TAS episodes and the first two issues of Batman & Robin Adventures. Apparently he had plans for a post-Face the Face issue of Detective Comics, but that was nixed because of Harvey's minimal involvement in the craptacular Salvation Run storyline. If I ever get the chance, I must ask him what that story was going to involve.

The second is a mention in Flashpoint, DC's new big event. Harvey only gets mentioned, but this is notable because it's the Harvey of an alternate universe, which we haven't seen since DC arbitrarily decided to stop making Elseworlds. Why? Probably because they hate fun. Also puppies. Of course, DC swears that the world of Flashpoint isn't an Elseworlds or alternate timeline, so what is it, then? Who the hell knows or cares? Well, okay, I kinda do. The story looks like it has potential, but then, so did Brightest Day. Point is, there's a different version of Harvey who only gets a mention, but it's an intriguing mention nonetheless.

These are both slight appearances, so let's take a quick look at them, shall we?

First, Arkham City. Following the events of the first game, a souped-up version of Venom called Titan has fallen into the hands of a the Trask siblings: brother-sister pair of thugs who call themselves "T&T." Batman naturally decides that the first person to ask for information on the Trasks is none other than Two-Face.

Man, Harvey hasn't even been trounced by Catwoman and/or Batman in the video game yet (and strange that there's absolutely no foreshadowing to anything akin to what we've seen in the trailers, although I'm sure we'll see that in future issues), and he already's had his ass thoroughly kicked by the Trasks! But hey, at least he has his own version of Sugar (who's dressed as Alice? Does she pull a double-shift as henchgirl with Harvey and Jervis?) and Spice.

The only part of this entire appearance that I like, including the next two pages, is Harvey's dismissal of his henchman's suggestion to shoot Batman. I love it when villains know when not to fucking bother, especially when it means avoiding the obligatory fight/shoot-out stuff.

At first, I assumed that Harvey was all beaten and bloody from a fight with Batman, considering that Arkham Asylum ended with Batman speeding off to fight Two-Face. I guess Dini's ignoring his own final little plot detail there. Ah well. Maybe it was an Impostor.

Yeah, there's not much to say from this. Harvey's not written in any way that's either stellar nor offensive. He's just kind of there and bland, like a standard gangster in a passive mood. The only thing to really take away from what we've seen about this character is that he's a seasoned player who knows when to sit back and let events transpire, especially when it comes to killing Batman. He's far too sensible to try attacking Batman, even with the home-field advantage and manpower. So that's kinda nice. But mainly, meh. Hopefully he'll be back in later issues, and DIni will actually have the character do something interesting.

Then there's Flashpoint, which features an alternate Gotham adorned with ads for "Wayne Casinos" and a rather brutal Batman chasing after a Harley-like henchwoman named "Yo-Yo," who works for the Joker.

Hee. I hope we actually get to see (or at least hear more of) Judge Dent and/or the Dent twins in the Flashpoint: Batman mini-series by the Broken City/100 Bullets team of Azzarello and Risso. Hell, I'll probably buy that one anyway, since that creative team is always worth checking out.

Finally, a quick note: real-life shall be consumed by the fact that I'll be performing at the Orlando Fringe Festival in Orlando, FL, so expect spotty updated over the next two to three weeks. We'll see how much free time I have. As always, if you have any suggestions, requests, or whatever, free free to send 'em my way... along with any friends or relatives you have in the Orlando area! :)
